Did you know the Scriptures state the Messiah had to come before the second temple was destroyed? It’s no wonder Dr. Michael Brown says Jewish rabbis have a tough time refuting Jesus is the Messiah!
We read in Daniel 9:25-26 that the Messiah would be killed (“cut off”) 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 445 BC. “Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.”
Daniel tells us that the Messiah, or the “anointed one,” will come after 62 weeks plus 7 weeks. If we multiply 69 times 7 (the weeks represent a period of 7 years each) we end up with 483 years. Then, since the Messiah will be cut off 483 years after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem, we must take the date of the decree (445 B.C.) and subtract it from 483.
But wait! Doesn’t that leave us with 38 extra years? We must remember that Jesus was born at around 5 B.C. Then, He died at about 33 A.D., so add 33 plus 5 and you get… 38! What an amazing prophecy that Daniel predicted about the Messiah!
Furthermore, Daniel 9:26 states that after the death of the Messiah, “The people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.” This tells us that the Christ had to be killed before the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. History tells us this destruction took place in 70 A.D. This further confirms Jesus is the Messiah since His death and Resurrection took place before Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed.
Hopefully this builds your faith in Jesus the Messiah. Explain this prophecy to your Jewish and skeptic friends so they can see the truth of Jesus as the Christ.
